Finance Development Program - Intern
Program Overview
The Finance Development Program (FDP) hires undergraduate juniors with an interest in finance, strategy, and healthcare to complete a summer internship. The project-based program offers an enriching summer experience involving several areas of Michigan Medicine, with the goal of enhancing financial abilities, leadership acumen, and knowledge of the business side of healthcare.
Top-performing interns are eligible for offers to join the full-time, rotation-based, two-year program the following summer. The goal of the full-time program is to offer increased development of the skills and experiences needed by analysts to accelerate and advance their careers at Michigan Medicine through in-depth, six-month projects throughout the organization.
Position Description
Over the summer, candidates will work on several project-based assignments spanning a wide range of Michigan Medicine operations and skills sets. As an analyst, candidates will gain exposure across areas including financial governance, departmental analysis functions, and assisting with senior leadership responsibilities.
Rotational opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Clinical Financial Planning and Analysis
- Enterprise Financial Reporting and Forecasting
- Financial Systems
- Medical School Finance
- Department of Psychiatry
- Reimbursement
- Real Estate
- Strategic Finance and Business Consulting
Upon completion of the program, analysts will have developed their finance and leadership skills alongside extensive industry knowledge. Improvement and learning will be showcased through a work portfolio developed over the course of the program. FDP projects often require the collaboration of different functional teams, giving program members a unique perspective, and a better understanding of how Michigan Medicine operates. Additionally, some projects allow for engagement with external stakeholders, including insurers, government entities, and strategic partners.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates meet the following qualifications:
- Completing junior year of a Bachelor’s program in Finance, Accounting, Business, Healthcare Administration, Economics, Statistics, Math, or a related field. Candidates from other disciplines with a keen interest in finance and/or healthcare are also welcome to apply.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
- Strong analytical skills with a meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic work environment and manage evolving projects effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), Tableau, financial intelligence software, and basic relational database management.
