Introduction

The Department of Revenue (DOR) is offering a multi-year training program to prepare students of accounting to become qualified as a Revenue Auditor 1 in the Division of Income, Sales & Excise Tax.  We are seeking motivated individuals who have an associate degree in accounting, are enrolled in an accredited college/university pursing a bachelor's degree in accounting, and who wish to obtain on-the-job experience to becoming a full-time auditor upon graduation.  

Individuals selected for this program would receive tuition assistance up to $10,000 per year for up to three (3) years towards the completion of a four-year degree in accounting.  Note, IRC section 127 provides for up to $5,250 of tax-free educational assistance per calendar year. Amounts of assistance paid above $5,250 are a taxable benefit.

This is the selection process for the 3-year employment training program with the start date beginning June 2, 2025. Bilingual (Spanish/Hmong) speakers are encouraged to apply.

Positions are primarily located at our Rimrock Road Office, which is conveniently located 5 minutes from downtown Madison, just off the Beltline and the Capitol City bike path. Some positions may be located at our Milwaukee office depending on availability.

Position Summary

Selected candidates will be fully employed as a Gateway Auditor Program – Auditor trainee (Tax Representative 3). This position would be full time (40 hours/week) during the summer to complete training and during school breaks or in between semesters while not in school. Students may continue full-time or reduce to part-time (minimum of 24 hours/week) during the school year while courses are being completed. Up to six hours per week may be used to complete coursework.

This Trainee level auditor position is responsible for reviewing and preparing assessment or refunds based on federal CP2000s, federal audit reports, and computer selected files; and pursuing non-filers based on predefined criteria. In this position you will also learn to audit individual income tax returns, credit claims, and have an opportunity to shadow and assist audits being done in other tax areas of the department.

 

Salary Information

The starting pay rate is $23.41 per hour. 

This position is in pay schedule/range 02-12. Pay rates for current state employees will be set in accordance with pay upon appointment provisions of the State of Wisconsin compensation plan.

Job Details

The department will conduct a criminal background check, fingerprint check and tax compliance check prior to making a job offer.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in accounting, with an acceptance to an accredited college or university bachelor’s degree accounting program.

(Note: Proof of degree and/or acceptance/enrollment will be required before start date).

  • Skills using Microsoft Office Suite Products (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook) or equivalent.

 

In addition to the above minimum qualifications, the following qualifications are preferred but not required:

  • Experience conducting research.
  • Experience working effectively on a team.
