ABOUT WSIA and the WSIA DIVERSITY FOUNDATION

The Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association (WSIA) is a member service organization representing the wholesale, specialty and surplus lines industry. Wholesale, specialty and surplus lines insurers fill the need for coverage in the marketplace by insuring risks that are declined by the standard underwriting processes of admitted carriers, and act as an effect supplement to the admitted insurance market.

The WSIA Diversity Foundation was created to promote diversity in areas including, but not limited to race, gender, disability and LGBTQ+ community, and influence meaningful progress in the diversity of the wholesale, specialty and surplus lines insurance industry and its talent pipeline.

ABOUT THE WSIA INTERNSHIP

  • Selected students will be placed with a brokerage or carrier firm in the growing $98 billion wholesale, specialty and surplus lines industry for a nine-week internship.
  • The wholesale, specialty and surplus lines industry covers unique and emerging risks such as athletes and celebrities, high-risk property, special events and concerts, cyber risk and security, natural disasters, the cannabis industry and medical research.
  • Experience can lead to full-time positions in brokerage and underwriting, actuarial science, accounting and finance, human resources, risk management, claims and marketing.
  • Interns receive on-the-job training, access to industry experts and the opportunity to work on meaningful projects while rotating among departments and shadowing members.
  • Students typically participate in weekly workshops and meetings and may have a final project/presentation at the end of the experience.
  • The goal of the internship is to learn about various markets and to understand coverage needs as well as assisting the team in the marketing, placement of business, and servicing of accounts.
  • All interns are matched with a mentor for the duration of the internship who serves as a third-party resource and additional industry representative for students to learn from.
