Job Description
The Regional Director of Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) is a field-based member of the Medical Affairs team. This role is responsible for all field‐based medical affairs activities comprising a business region and leads a team of Medical Science Liaisons. The role reports to the VP of Medical Affairs in Global Medical Affairs.
This role is responsible for significant business impact including continued support of clinical data generation to support the entire product portfolio, high scientific presence at major customer‐ facing congresses and scientific support of all key surgical customers across the region.
In addition, the role is responsible for effective customer‐facing communication, medical presentations and dissemination of scientific materials across the entire region. Further, the role is directly responsible for business performance elements of the Region’s Executive Leadership Team such as scientific Share of voice and competitive clinical evidence generation.
This individual serves as field coach and lead, to achieve results and Alcon’s key performance indicators, while maintaining an enterprise mindset, strategic agility and business acumen, with the highest integrity. The role is adept at managing internal and external cross functional collaboration and requires executive presence.
Accountabilities:
Lead and manage a team of regional medical science liaisons across multiple states/countries
Maintain deep scientific/clinical knowledge of the Alcon Surgical or Vision Care portfolio
Develop complex Key Opinion Leader mapping and development strategy and execution plan
Lead Alcon's scientific Share of Voice and podium presence at key scientific meetings across several regions/countries
Lead clinical intelligence efforts across multiple congresses and scientific meetings
Ensure close alignment between global franchise and regional business priorities in context of scientific customer interactions
Lead customer‐generated clinical data gathering and customer research support activities across multiple regions/countries
Responsible for operational objectives and mid-term planning
Internal and/or external influencing of key stakeholders to achieve scientific objectives aligned with key performance indicators
Apply negotiation and persuasion skills towards interactions with research sites to ensure timely completion of agreed milestones
Lead and manage the data dissemination/medical presentations execution plan for the MSLs
Support collection of scientific field insights and advice seeking surveys by MSLs and lead reporting findings to CRD, Marketing and commercial leadership
Maintain budget and department financial milestones are achieved (IITs, T&E)
Create and execute quarterly MSL plans and project deliverables
Identify data gaps for scientific real world data generation based on ECP insights
Report Medical Safety/Quality issues per company policy
Interface effectively with all other Alcon functions and departments, including Commercial, QA, Research and Development, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, HEOR, etc.
Performs field management visits with individual MSLs to support territory development and promptly address field challenges or issues; the frequency of these meetings will be dependent on operational loads for specific projects
Internal Alcon Support − Provide medical support and clinical support, as appropriate, (i.e., disease state and product) to colleagues (e.g. sales reps, Regulatory Affairs colleagues, etc.), or at advisory boards, but not as a substitute for those functional training groups
Integrity and Compliance − Work with Integrity and Compliance observing all laws, industry standards, and company policies.
Comply with all credentialing requirements for any healthcare institution (e.g., hospital) which is part of the region, including, among other things, routine background checks, medical testing (i.e., Tuberculosis test) or proof of immunizations, training on facility policies, adherence to confidentiality, etc.
Develop a strong understanding of the future needs of ophthalmic surgeons and support scientific peer to peer education in alignment with Alcon strategy.
Provide non-promotional speaker training to HCPs to support education to the healthcare community about therapies developed and commercialized.
Assure thoughtful and informed exchange of current medical information and data related to Alcon products and selected areas of therapeutic interest with KOLs.
Excellent written and verbal English communication skills are required.
Key Requirements/Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +18 yrs; Assoc.+14 yrs; M.S.+7 yrs; PhD+6 yrs)
The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English

6 Years of Demonstrated Leadership
Work hours: M-F, standard
Travel Requirements: 50-70%

Preferred Requirements:
Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in the ophthalmology or optometry field (academia, industry, practice), with at least 3 of those in the surgical ophthalmic industry or clinical practice.
Minimum of 7+ years in people management role and MSL/industry experience highly preferred
