Data Center Operations Specialist

 

JOB PURPOSE:

Ensure the efficient and highly available operation of the Midco business data centers in alignment with the business objectives of the organization.  Coordinate, facilitate, and plan day to day operational activity within the business data center facilities at Midco.  Work closely with internal and external customers pertaining to data center related activities. 

KEY FUNCTIONS:
 

  • Manage the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrade and support of all colocation data center facilities systems.
  • Scheduling and managing preventative maintenance of data center equipment.
  • Use best practices to establish data center operations based on tier II and tier III standards.
  • Perform daily inspections of equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain proper record of work operations, logs, and events to provide detailed reporting to management.
  • Create and provide training of data center processes and procedures.
  • Perform system administration tasks to keep facilities equipment up to date.
  • Routine backups of critical facilities equipment and devices.
  • Develop and maintain standards, policies, and procedures for systems, security, emergency and disaster.
  • Oversee running of structured cabling during installation of new equipment.
  • Repair of damaged or faulty facilities equipment.
  • Asset management for data center hardware, software, and equipment.
  • Continuous monitoring of equipment for proper operation.
  • Knowledge and configuration of networking/server equipment, low voltage cabling, power distribution, and systems troubleshooting.
  • Perform scheduled equipment testing.
  • Work with new and existing customers for access, installation, and Smart Hands needs.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in all forms of communication with internal and external customers.
  • Adhere to Midco privacy guidelines to ensure each customer’s privacy.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with management.
  • Build and maintain vendor relationships.
  • Identify areas of improvement or opportunity and communicate with management.
  • Assist with the operation of multiple data center facilities providing a high level of uptime.
  • Effectively communicate with other departments to handle any escalating issues.
  • Function as an effective team member while supporting the efforts and concepts of other departments.
  • Support the mission, vision, and values of Midco.
  • Apply personal ethics, honesty, initiative, flexibility, responsibility and confidentiality in all areas of responsibility.
  • Possess an enthusiastic, energetic, self-motivated, and detail-oriented approach towards work and all work projects.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Attend customer meetings with sales providing technical assistance and answers to data center related questions.
  • Maintain regular attendance.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Datacenter Systems Engineering or closely related or combination of education and experience equivalent to such a degree required.
  • Two years of relatable IT experience OR a combination of education and experience equivalent to such experience required.
  • Critical facilities or data center experience preferred.
  • Ability to deliver projects into production successfully.
  • Knowledge of physical security standards for tier II and tier III data center applications.
  • Experience, understanding, and knowledge of data center design/build projects.
  • High level of communication skills and customer service orientation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or carry loads of up to 50 lbs.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
  • The employee will be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week and other than normal business hours, such as holidays, evenings and weekends as business demands. This includes on-call duties.
