Summary
This position is located in Yosemite National Park, in the Visitor and Resource Division.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Yosemite National Park is April to October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.
Duties
These positions work in Yosemite National Park performing lead traffic management duties in support of the park wide operations of the Division of Resource and Visitor Protection, law enforcement office. The purpose of the position is to provide guidance and leadership to traffic control aids in the mitigation and management of traffic congestion, facilitation of visitor traffic flow around emergency scenes, controlling parking, and providing information to visitors as necessary.
Duties:
- Serves as shift lead for up to 10 employees. Leads Traffic Control Aids in the monitoring of vehicular traffic levels against pedestrian traffic and leads the control on intersections with regards to safety and the smooth flow of vehicles.
- Personally observes and monitors parking lots, directs buses and motor homes to appropriate parking stalls, close parking lots when full. Reports information to supervisor.
- Drives government vehicles on park roads and or state federal highways including outlying areas of the park.
- Leads staff or personally provides traffic control in and around emergency scenes as directed by park law enforcement personnel.
- Reports to supervisor or law enforcement dispatchers any public use and or traffic violations or visitor use problems or emergencies via radio communications or in person.
Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000-foot-high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.
Physical Demands: The work demands long periods of standing at a fixed post and or walking on paved or uneven dirt surfaces. The employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, dust, flying debris requiring sureness of balance and knowledge or personal protective equipment.
Working Conditions: The work is exclusively outdoors on dirt, gravel or pavement during the spring and summer seasons. The ambient temperature during these periods range from 50-110* Fahrenheit, with some variations dependent on the elevation of the assignment. Work assignment elevation ranges from below 4,000 ft to over 10,000 ft. Work is primarily on foot in roadways and parking lots, sidewalks, trails with some work accomplished on bicycle or while operating a government vehicle.
