Distribution Planning Engineer

About the Role: Responsible for directly supporting KUB’s plans to modernize the design and operation of the electric distribution system. Provide direction and planning for various programs within Grid Modernization with a focus on leading our distribution automation deployment. Responsible for all phases of project implementation. Support planning and implementation of current and future grid modernization programs, including but not limited to Fault Location, Isolation, Service Restoration (FLISR), Volt-Var Optimization (VVO) and Distribution Management System (DMS), including control and integration of inverter-based distribution assets; planning and forecasting tools (CYME); and analysis and visualization of archival and real-time power system data. Investigate new and emerging technologies in the industry and assess the relevance and benefit to KUB’s grid modernization strategy. This role will provide technical guidance, project management, and grid modernization insight and
planning. Works closely with Operations staff and/or external customers primarily in support of operations and project activity. Receive training to perform storm response duties with other department members.
Qualifications
Physical Requirements:
Works primarily in an office setting, but field visits and field activities may be required. These field visits may include: emergency response activities and support beyond normal business hours, heavy lifting or strenuous work and mobility over rough terrain. Requires bending, stooping, lifting, and working in awkward and strenuous positions at times. Occasionally requires above normal mental and visual alertness. Physical demands for a specific position within this classification may vary and/or exceed those demands described above.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited four-year college or university
Advanced analytical and project management skills
Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and team skills
Ability to work independently on multiple projects in a timely manner
Ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels in the organization in a team environment
Valid driver’s license
Preferred Requirements:
Professional Engineer license in the State of Tennessee or ability to obtain Professional Engineer license in the State of Tennessee through comity
Three (3+) or more years of experience in electrical engineering, preferably with an electric utility
Experience with Microstation, AutoCAD, Cyme, ArcGIS, and/or ArcMap
Thorough understanding of power system engineering concepts such as power flow, voltage regulation, power factor and technical losses, device coordination during normal and alternate system configurations
Experience in substation design, protection and controls with various digital and electro-mechanical relays
Understanding of existing and cutting-edge electric distribution technology and operations
