The Structural Civil Engineer position is part of the North Dakota Division's Engineering and Operations Team that also includes safety; operations; environment; right-of-way; design; contract and consultation administration; pavements and materials; quality assurance/quality control; and project delivery.
In addition to providing structural expertise and National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) oversight, the selectee will manage assigned program areas and oversight activities related to Risk-Based Stewardship and Oversight (RBSO) Projects; program and process reviews; and Compliance Assessment Program (CAP) Reviews.

As a Structural Civil Engineer, you will:
- Represent the Division at meetings and discussions of bridge, tunnel, and other structures related policy and program matters and addresses/responds to correspondence relating to same.
- Administer FHWA structural inspection program(s) (e.g., National Bridge Inspection Program (NBIP) and National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP)). Provide oversight of State compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS) and recommends improvements.
- Maintain and conduct a Risk Based Stewardship and Oversight Program for bridges, tunnels, and structures under design and construction and ensures that there is full coordination with responsible Division staff and State representatives.
- Understand the relationship between asset management requirements and bridge condition performance management requirements in the statute and regulations and how they work together.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned mid-career structural engineering professional with experience in bridge and tunnel design; construction inspection; and program management.
Additionally, the ideal candidate must possess excellent communication, negotiation, and partnering skills and desire to work in a challenging, complex, and innovative environment.
The North Dakota Division's "Structural Civil Engineer" represents the Federal Highway Administration to other Federal, state, local, and key transportation stakeholders.
