Cabin Counselor Supervisor

Title: Bale Leader / Cabin Counselor Supervisor

Department: Camp Program 

Reports to: Residential Life Support Team Supervisor

Location: Camp located in Lake Hughes, CA

 

Qualifications:

  • At least 19 years of age.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to physically and mentally assist in taking care of 8 to 10 campers 24 hours per day, when Camp is in session.
  • Possess the emotional strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of and interaction with campers over the duration of employment, while remaining alert, friendly, and patient.
  • Ability to creatively plan and facilitate an activity as assigned.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

 

Summary: 

The Bale Leader is responsible for supporting and encouraging each cabin counselor and camper to participate fully in all aspects of camp by performing the following duties

 

Specific Responsibilities: 

  • To Participate in all staff training.
  • To oversee operations of 4 cabins (32-40 campers, 16 staff)
  • To oversee childcare and behavioral issues.
  • To supervise volunteers and staff.
  • To communicate daily with the Residential Life Support Team Supervisor on all issues regarding cabin life.
  • To be sensitive to working styles of counselors and appropriately support counselors and cabins in the Bale.
  • To plan special Bale events and work on Bale coordination and communication.
  • To oversee ordering of kitchen supplies for all cabin/bale activities.
  • To attend activities with the campers and help each camper abide by the camp rules.
  • To encourage each child to fully participate in the camp program.
  • To have empathy, trust, and mutual respect for staff and campers alike.
  • To model behavior for other staff, campers, leaders-in-training, and junior counselors.
  • To maintain communication with program counselors.
  • To take care of oneself to give the strongest job performance possible.
  • To adhere to and implement all American Camping Accreditation requirements in cabin life.
  • To help in the maintenance of the cabin.
  • To be responsible for knowing and adhering to the policies and procedures contained within the camp manual.
  • To be responsible for the safety of all campers in the cabin environment.
  • To be a mandated reporter if a camper discloses sexual, physical, or emotional abuse or neglect.
  • To report all unusual incidents and occurrences to supervisors as soon as possible and fill-out all necessary paperwork.
  • To attend all meeting(s) required for cabin counselors and all other obligations deemed necessary by the Camp Director.

Emotional/Mental Demands: The staff member must cognitively be able to participate in the camp program without assistance. The staff member is required to communicate and work with campers aged 7-18 and provide necessary instruction and information to campers and/or other staff. The staff member must be able to identify and communicate safety concerns and emergency situations and procedures to campers and other staff. The staff member must possess the mental and emotional strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of and interaction with campers throughout the duration of session while remaining alert, friendly, and patient.
