The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
The Indiana State Personnel Department is seeking a Field Operations Intern to join the Department of Natural Resources’ HR team in summer 2025. INSPD’s Field Operations professionals are located on-site at partner agencies within the State of Indiana. The DNR HR team collaborates with DNR leadership to provide strategic, data-informed HR solutions and programs to meet the needs of DNR employees during all phases of the employee lifecycle. The intern will primarily assist with the development of an agency-specific onboarding and orientation process for incoming employees. Additionally, the intern will gain valuable experience by assisting team members with projects in multiple facets of Human Resources, including talent acquisition, compensation, employee relations, performance management, and learning and development.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour.
A Day in the Life:
As a Field Operations Intern with the Indiana State Personnel Department, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience by:
- Working hands-on with DNR HR team members, executive leadership, directors, and employees to enhance DNR’s brand image and achieve organizational goals.
- Developing a robust, agency-specific orientation and onboarding process for new employees within the agency.
- Processing personnel forms and maintaining accurate digital records to ensure timely and efficient data entry.
- Leading and/or assisting with specialized projects based on the agency’s current needs and future plans.
- Drafting content, reviewing edits, and assisting with the facilitation of training/workshops within the agency.
- Supporting recruitment and talent acquisition activities within the agency (attending career fairs, processing new hires, reviewing background checks, etc.)
- Assisting in the review and recommendation of compensation rates for new employees to preserve equity within the agency.
- Assisting with the coordination and facilitation of the State of Indiana’s interim review process (an assessment of an employee’s year-to-date progress on established goals).
- Providing additional support to DNR HR team members during internal employee investigations, including notetaking and report writing, to increase efficiency and accuracy.
What You'll Need for Success:
- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
- Academic work in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, Labor Relations, Psychology, Organizational Management, or a related field
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to analyze data sets related to Human Resources and/or organizational management
- Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
- Ability to conduct well-informed research
- Ability to solve complex, critical problems
- Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
