CDC NCIRD Preventable Disease Internship Program – Data Analytics Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: An internship opportunity is currently available with the Immunization Services Division (ISD) in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This opportunity can be part-time or full-time and is eligible to be 100% virtual within 50 miles of the appointment location.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The mission of the Immunization Services Division (ISD) is to protect individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases through the provision of federal funds and contracts to purchase vaccines, the provision of technical and financial support of immunization programs, provider and public education, and evaluation and research. Within ISD is the Surveillance and Epidemiology Branch (SEB), which works to provide scientific leadership on the measurement of vaccination coverage across the lifespan and provides a comprehensive online platform for visualizing vaccination coverage data (https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vaxview/index.html).
SEB: The Surveillance and Epidemiology Branch (SEB) assesses domestic vaccination coverage and vaccine confidence and demand across the lifespan.
Research Project: This internship will provide a broad and diverse set of experiences in all arenas of data science focused on vaccination program and outcomes data for the public, for healthcare and public health practitioners, state and local jurisdictions, and partners. These experiences would be matched with the interests, knowledge, and skills of the intern and provide opportunities to contribute to SEB and ISD/NCIRD science, program, and evaluation activities. The activities would span data and data sources shared by ISD via public-facing VaxViews plus new project VaxVizApp (Vaccination Data and Visualization Application) which will integrate program and outcomes data from various internal and external sources for use by ISD/NCIRD/CDC staff, STLT staff, and other partners for routine and outbreak/pandemic vaccination needs. Additionally, the intern will have an opportunity to explore use of automation, natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) (building on ISD/NCIRD's COVID Vaccination, Flu, and Internal SmartFind ChatBots) to increase use of and insights gained from quantitative and qualitative vaccination data.
Learning Objectives: Generalized but varies upon specific activities and project(s) the fellow will be assigned these learning activities:
- Improve their understanding of the landscape of vaccination data
- Contribute to assessment and evaluation of vaccination data
- Contribute to the design and implementation of VaxVizApp
- Provide feedback to help improve vaccination data
- Gain KSAs related to automation, NLP, ML.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 10, 2025. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for six months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time or part time.
Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received an associate's, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years, or be currently pursuing.
