This is a Student Internship position under the Pathways Internship Program.

To qualify for this internship, you must be a continuing student enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the upcoming semester for the duration of the internship as a condition of employment (taking at least a "half time" course load). You will be required to provide documentation (transcript, enrollment certification, etc.) to support eligibility. Students may be employed throughout the academic year.

The Civil Engineer Pathways Student Intern will assist FHWA's Ohio Division Engineering and Operations Team with bridge and pavement reviews; project reviews; construction inspections; and work zone reviews. Additionally, duties will include report writing, data analysis, and assisting with discretionary grant projects. Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing and providing insights on Federal laws, regulations, and FHWA policies applicable to Federal-aid projects.
  • Assisting in the conduct of project reviews in accordance with the Division’s Risk-Based Stewardship and Oversight plan.
  • Assisting in reviewing required project actions for appropriate application of design standards and criteria, conformance with policy and regulations.
  • Assisting in authorizing project agreements which may include reviewing the adequacy of proposed rights-of-way clearances, NEPA, construction plans, agreements for utility and railroad work, consultant agreements.

The ideal candidate for this position is currently enrolled in an engineering degree-seeking program.

Additionally, the ideal candidate is currently studying to be an engineer with the ability to analyze data and monitor Federally funded highway programs or assist in the review of highway projects from initial scoping through construction support and maintenance.

The ideal candidate has experience conveying ideas and concepts to persuade others in meetings, discussions, and writing.
