JOB DUTIES: 

Prepare food items for meals within jail facilities and oversees inmates assigned to assist with preparation. Demonstrates proper cooking and measuring methods to inmates. Monitors use of cooking tools and their proper return by inmates. Assures cleanliness of work area. Oversees inmates and assists in washing dishes and pots and pans. Assures that kitchen is kept tidy and in operating order for oncoming cooks. Records each meal count in logbook. Other duties as assigned. 

MAJOR WORK CHARACTERISTICS: 

Knowledge of safety practices. Skill in operation of kitchen equipment. Ability to understand system of procedures. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds multiple times per shift. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:  

  • High School Diploma or GED.  
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. 

Additional Requirements:  

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers.  
  • Ability to pass a pre-assignment medical examination and annual re-examinations per Ohio Administrative Code 5120:1-8-10(G).

Developed after employment: Knowledge of supervision of inmates in controlled environment & related safety practices, Sheriff’s Office rules and regulations. Ability to apply Sheriff’s Office core competencies to solve practical everyday problems, develop good rapport with inmates. 

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended or intermittent periods of time.
