HEALTH DIRECTOR
DATES: June 16 - August 15 (includes training, summer camp, & time-off periods).
POSITION SALARY: Starting at $550 per week, based on experience and job responsibilities, with the possibility of weekly or per diem employment through mid September.
Housing and Meals provided.
REPORTS TO: Camp Director
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: To oversee the health and safety of all campers and staff by providing medical treatment, responding to emergencies and safety practices are maintained throughout camp.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Hold one of the following: Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Physician, or Physician’s Assistant (PA).
- Knowledge of and experience working with children in a medical setting.
- Ability to maintain health records.
- Ability to administer medication or supervise the self-administration of medication.
- Current advanced level CPR certification that is in compliance with NYS Department of Health regulations, or willingness to obtain.
- Current advanced level First Aid certification that is in compliance with NYS Department of Health regulations, or willingness to obtain.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of campers and camp staff by following healthcare policies and procedures as described in the American Camp Association standards and NYS Department of Health, and collaborating with counselors and other staff about medical needs of campers.
- Set up the camp health center prior to the start of the camp season. Ensure the camp health center is inventoried and work with the Camp Director to procure all necessary supplies and equipment prior to the start of the camp season.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records that are in compliance with New York State and American Camp Association standards.
- Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications, including gathering and documenting first aid records from other staff members.
- Understand and utilize UltraCamp online system for medical reporting, paperwork and emergency contact information.
- Distribute necessary camper health information to unit counselors on the first day of each session.
- Ensure camper and staff health examinations are current and on file.
- Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms as applicable.
- Maintaining in-depth knowledge about the facility and its emergency action plan. Activate the emergency action plan when necessary; respond to on-site incidents and accidents. Follow reporting procedures to the Camp Director and Executive Director as needed.
- Prepare and distribute first aid kids throughout the camp, including to the living units, camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, and off-camp trips, ensuring supplies are well-stocked and re-distributed as needed.
- Prepare all necessary medical paperwork and supplies for off-camp trips.
- Deliver an orientation session during pre-camp staff training on medical services; ensure the camp staff know their role related to healthcare and first aid; provide orientation on health care procedures, emergency procedures, staff health assessment of campers, accident prevention, and procedures for giving first aid in the camp setting.
- Screen or oversee the screening of all campers and staff who are arriving at camp, including verifying health history and emergency authorization, identifying any observable evidence of illness or communicable disease, conducting a health assessment, and collecting all medications used by campers or staff.
- Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp, observing the daily cleanliness in the food service and health care facilities.
- Promptly reporting any health problems, such as symptoms of illness or issues with camper medication, to the Camp Director.
- Supervise any COVID-19 protocol adherence throughout camp, ensuring campers and staff are implementing all policies.
- Contact parents concerning the status of their child’s health during any notable health condition, such as an injury requiring x-ray, a stay in the health center, emergency treatment or accident, etc.

- Assist with weekly camp clean up between sessions, to include sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick-up, etc.
- Assist in other camp duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE POSITION:
- Ability to endure standing for long hours and perform activities such as running, bending, stooping, and stretching.
- Ability to traverse varying terrain while moving between activities.
- Ability to operate with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and varying environmental conditions.
- Endurance to meet emergency needs.
- Ability (and willingness) to live in a communal camp setting with adults and children while working irregular hours.
