Oxy’s Summer Intern Program runs from May to August for a full 12 weeks. As an Oxy intern, you will have the opportunity to experience real-life projects with hands-on participation in Oxy’s core businesses. Your summer project will be designed to add value to our operations while providing an opportunity to observe your skills and competencies in action. Oxy interns are paired with a manager and mentor in order to provide technical guidance throughout the project timeline. Internship Opportunity: Data Analysis Intern - Corporate Security
Project Title: Data Analysis
Project Description: Join our Corporate Security team as a Data Analysis Intern and contribute to a critical project aimed at enhancing our incident reporting and data analysis capabilities. Our team uses various tools to collect and report field data related to incidents that can negatively impact our business performance and personnel. This project focuses on developing a program that utilizes trend analysis in conjunction with historical data workflows to identify patterns and trends, ultimately supporting security initiatives by mitigating the risk of recurring incidents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Security management and operations staff to understand the incident data collection process and identify improvement opportunities.
- Develop a system to examine historical data and identify patterns and trends using existing company systems such as GIS, SharePoint, and PowerBI.
- Make recommendations for increased efficiencies in current automated and manual systems and processes of departmental data storage, processing, and handling.
- Provide significant input throughout the project to ensure the achievement of goals and objectives.
Learning Opportunities:
- Work directly with the entire security team and collaborate with IT professionals supporting security systems.
- Gain hands-on experience in data analysis, trend identification, and predictive mapping.
- Develop skills in using geographic information systems (GIS) to visualize predicted patterns and potential future scenarios.
Desired Outcome:
- Analyze historical data to find recurring patterns and trends.
- Use statistical methods to identify trends and translate insights into visual representations on a map.
- Show potential future scenarios based on identified trends to help make informed decisions and allocate resources effectively.
Success Factors and Timeline:
- The project is expected to last the duration of the internship period.
- Security management will monitor the project's progress to ensure key performance indicators are achieved, including software selection, formatting, systems integration, and product testing.
- The outcome should provide data classification and handling efficiencies to augment security operations' effectiveness and minimize manual entry errors.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a relevant degree program (e.g., Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Security Studies).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with data analysis tools and software (e.g., GIS, SharePoint, PowerBI).
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
