Assistant Principal/Activities Director

Primary Function:

 

The Assistant Principal/Activities Director (AP/AD) at Rangely Jr./Sr. High School provides leadership and management to support academic and extracurricular success. This dual-role position oversees staff supervision, student discipline, program development, and extracurricular activities while addressing issues and challenges on campus or with students.

 

Collaborating with the principal, district administration, school board, and other leaders, the AP/AD ensures programs and processes align with the district's mission, vision, and values. The role is integral to fostering a positive school climate, promoting student achievement, and supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally as they prepare for post-secondary education or the workforce.

 

Relationship to Student Achievement:  

 

The Assistant Principal/Activities Director plays a critical role in promoting student achievement through both academic and extracurricular avenues in a small Junior/Senior High School program. This dual role emphasizes creating an environment where students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally to transition successfully to post-secondary education or the workforce.

 

Directly Responsible to:  

 

Junior/High School Principal

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Education (preferred) or a Bachelor’s Degree with relevant experience.
  • A valid Teacher License is required; an Administrative License or the ability to obtain one is preferred.
  • Successful teaching experience, ideally at the secondary level, with additional experience in coaching or extracurricular leadership.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills, with the ability to coordinate transportation, schedule events, and manage multiple programs.
  • Proficiency in using technology and data for decision-making, communication, and program evaluation.
  • Commitment to fostering positive relationships with staff, students, parents, and community members, while building a collaborative and inclusive school culture.
  • Proven ability to motivate and inspire others, along with experience working with parents to support student growth and engagement in academics and extracurricular activities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment aligned with state and district standards.
  • Expertise in effective employee supervision, evaluation, and student disciplinary practices, with a focus on restorative approaches and positive behavior support systems.
  • Familiarity with CHSAA rules and regulations and experience developing successful extracurricular programs that emphasize skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a smaller, rural school setting, understanding the unique challenges and opportunities within a close-knit community.
  • A commitment to preparing students for post-secondary education, workforce readiness, and life skills through academic and extracurricular programs.



 

Performance responsibilities

Instructional Leadership:

 

  1. Collaborate with the principal, staff, students, and stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate school improvement plans aligned with district goals and Colorado State Standards.
  2. Supervise and support instructional programs to ensure alignment with state standards, teacher evaluation standards, and district goals.
  3. Promote professional growth and development for faculty and staff through mentorship, constructive feedback, and access to development opportunities.
  4. Analyze student performance data in collaboration with the principal, faculty, and staff to guide curriculum improvements and targeted support for at-risk students.
  5. Assist with due process and disciplinary actions in accordance with school and district policies, ensuring fair, consistent, and equitable implementation of guidelines.

 

  • Foster a collaborative environment that supports continuous improvement and student success through teamwork and open communication.

 

 

Student Achievement and Discipline:

 

  1. Ensure high academic standards and equitable access to educational opportunities for all students.
  2. Oversee student discipline, implementing restorative practices and other strategies to create a positive school climate.
  3. Collaborate with the Principal to identify and support at-risk students, ensuring appropriate interventions.

 

Operational Management:

 

  1. Manage the school’s budget for athletics and activities, by aligning expenditures with programming goals, ensuring compliance with district policies, and overseeing requisitions, invoices, and proper use of funds.
  2. Ensure compliance with CHSAA by-laws, district policies, state laws, and federal regulations, with a focus on safety and emergency preparedness.
  3. Implement and monitor safety protocols and emergency procedures, including communication and documentation for activities and events.

 

  • Support staff and faculty in implementing programs with fidelity and high standards to promote student success.

 

 

Extracurricular Leadership:

 

  1. Program Planning and Evaluation: Plan, implement, and evaluate interscholastic activities and programs that foster skill development, sportsmanship, and an appreciation for various extracurricular opportunities. Ensure programs align with academic priorities and district goals.
  2. Strategic Oversight: Develop and maintain a strategic long-term plan for athletics and activities, including proposals for equipment leasing or purchasing.
  3. Supervision and Coordination: Hire, evaluate, and supervise coaches, sponsors, game workers, and volunteers to ensure effective program delivery. Co-supervise the athletics/attendance secretary and oversee other supervisory or evaluative duties as assigned by the principal. Provide professional development opportunities as needed.
  4. Student Eligibility and Records: Oversee student eligibility in compliance with CHSAA, district, and building policies. Collect, file, and notify athletes, coaches, and sponsors regarding eligibility and maintain accurate student records.
  5. Recognition and Awards: Plan and attend recognition programs for extracurricular achievements. Oversee criteria for and distribution of awards, including letters, academic honors, and other recognitions.
  6. Budget and Fundraising: Collaborate with the principal to monitor and provide feedback on the athletics and activities budget. Oversee fundraising efforts, ensuring adherence to district protocols, and manage day-to-day expenditures responsibly.
  7. Scheduling and Logistics: Work with the athletics secretary, coaching staff, and transportation supervisor to schedule competitions, practices, and events. Coordinate transportation, accommodations, and game officials. Secure workers for contests, such as announcers, scorekeepers, and line judges.
  8. Facility Management: Schedule and coordinate the use of athletic facilities and fields with academic and extracurricular priorities, collaborating with office staff, maintenance personnel, and community partners.
  9. Communication and Liaison: Act as a liaison between coaches, the athletic booster club, and the Rio Blanco Recreation District to promote and support school activities. Monitor physical and digital communication regarding extracurricular events through social media and other platforms.
  10. Compliance and Safety: Stay current on CHSAA rules and district policies, ensuring consistent, equitable, and fair implementation of guidelines. Oversee the implementation of safety protocols and emergency procedures during activities and events, including concussion management.
  11. Event Oversight: Prepare and manage master schedules for athletics and activities, including conference, non-conference, regional, and state events. Create and approve competition contracts and ensure proper documentation for events.
  12. Program Improvement: Evaluate athletic and extracurricular programs annually, providing recommendations for improvement to the principal and administration.
  13. Conflict Resolution: Address concerns, questions, and suggestions from students, staff, parents, and the community. Mediate and resolve issues related to athletics and activities.
  14. District Representation: Represent the school district at regional meetings, events, and competitions. Travel to away games and events as needed.
  15. Publications and Updates: Maintain and update athletic and activity calendars, brochures, resource guides, and handbooks to reflect current programs and opportunities.
  16. Postseason Activities: Coordinate postseason contests, events, celebrations, and awards in collaboration with CHSAA and district requirements.
  17. Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the principal.

 

Community Engagement:

 

  1. Build strong relationships with families, community members, and local organizations to support school programs and initiatives.
  2. Communicate effectively with stakeholders, providing regular updates on school performance and activities.
  3. Represent the school at district and community meetings, fostering a positive image of the institution.

 

Safety and Compliance:

 

  1. Ensure the implementation of safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  2. Collaborate with district officials to maintain facilities, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.
  3. Communicate and document medical and emergency procedures for activities and events.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  1. Serve as a mentor to staff and students, modeling professionalism and ethical leadership.
  2. Act as a liaison between the school and the district, ensuring alignment with broader educational goals.
  3. Assist in recruiting, hiring, and retaining high-quality staff members.
  4. Support the district’s efforts in reducing chronic absenteeism and improving overall attendance.
  5. Serves as part of the school’s administrative team; oversees the administration of assigned school programs and processes, including the implementation of policies.

 

Terms of Employment/Pay:

 

  • 200 days (excluding holidays and vacation time)
  • Salary as per district pay scale, commensurate with experience and qualifications

 

Evaluations:

 

Performance of this job will be based on the board’s policy on evaluation.
