Medical Student Intern
BACKGROUND:
This paid internship position supports the Realizing and Encouraging Adolescents to pursue Careers in Healthcare (R.E.A.C.H) program at Atrium Health Navicent. The goal of the R.E.A.C.H. Program is to expose and promote healthcare careers to about 70 high school students in Macon-Bibb and surrounding counties, as well as Peach and Baldwin counties. The target audience for this program are students, > 16 years of age, who have an interest in healthcare careers
R.E.A.C.H. PROGRAM DETAILS:
- The program will run for 4 weeks, M-F, starting at 8am daily, with an end time between 2-5pm daily (depending on the daily activities).
- The dates of the program are June 23 – July 18, 2025
- Daily activities of the R.E.A.C.H program will consist of:
- Observe a “Day in the Profession” by shadowing on a weekly rotational basis, one of the following clinical areas: Nursing, Pharmacy, Respiratory Therapy, Radiology Technology, Laboratory, Healthcare Administration, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Practice Management, Patient Care Navigation, Regulatory and Healthcare Operations..
- Daily professional engagement and development facilitated during afternoon student forum, may include:
- Medical skills simulation and hands on training
- Discussion by healthcare professionals on how to become a practitioner as well as practice options for different healthcare areas.
- Discussion on how to navigate higher education pathways.
- Discussion around financial fitness
- Engagement with leaders and learning resources.
- Educational field trips (optional)
- Education about career opportunities at Atrium Health Navicent
- Volunteering
- Locations of the program include Atrium health Navicent the Medical Center, Atrium Health Baldwin, Atrium Health Peach, and Beverly Knight Olsen Children's Hospital
MEDICAL STUDENT INTERN RESPONSIBLITIES
- Set up and Enter pre-program data.
- Provide administration and coordination services to support the day-to-day operations of the program, including oversight for the daily curriculum of the program, ensuring students are able to navigate the daily schedule. This includes being the point of contact for student questions throughout the day. This includes making sure students are able to get to their AM shadowing experiences and working with all afternoon lecturer / activity hosts to ensure smooth facilitation of afternoon activities, including serving as a chaperone on field trips.
- Aid in the fine-tuning of curricula to optimize student experience.
- Provide mentorship to the HS students, including giving formal talks to the students.
- Must be able to work independently, demonstrate initiative and leadership and be able to communicate effective.
- At the close of the program, supporting all program close out activities, data collection and reporting.
- Attend all program staff meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned, as related to the program.
- Maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to the HS students.
- The intern must be available for 6 weeks (1 week before and 1 week after the start and stop of the program).
- The intern must be available every day during the hours of the program AND must be physically present during the afternoon sessions.
- During the week before and after the intern must be available for some in person meetings but may complete pre and post program work virtually
- Expected 30-40 hours week (M-F) in person, and the remaining hours if any, being available by phone.
- Must have transportation to travel between sites as assigned.
- MUST complete all onboarding requirements in a timely manner
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently a medical student, college student or recent college graduate in good standing
- Ability to physically meet job requirements, including mobility.
- Ability to participate in all program activities.
