The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution that was created by the US Congress to serve as America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and an educational institution dedicated to the history and lessons of the Holocaust. The Museum seeks to educate Americans from all 50 states and all walks of life as well as international audiences. The Museum has three areas of expertise: Holocaust remembrance, Holocaust scholarship and education, and genocide prevention.

Information about the Office/Division:
The internship position within the Museum Experience and Digital Media office offers the opportunity to use your user experience design and research skills to improve the Museum’s main website, ushmm.org. You will conduct Discovery research to help us improve this website’s navigation, and create wireframes to improve a variety of pages and sections of the website. This role will allow you to gain experience with a variety of UX tools and methods, while contributing to the Museum’s mission of inspiring citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity.
This position resides within the office of Museum Experience and Digital Media (MEDM). The Museum Experience and Digital Media office (MEDM) creates and maintains experiences in physical and digital spaces that encourage people to think about how and why the Holocaust happened and the lessons it holds for us today. The office applies an audience-centered approach, best practices in storytelling, and new technologies across platforms to create experiences for a variety of audiences. These include the general public, Museum visitors, students, educators, policy makers, and donors, among others.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties and responsibilities highlight the key tasks that the intern will be responsible for in support of the Museum Experience and Digital Media office. They primarily encompass user experience research and design for the Museum’s core website, ushmm.org.
- UX Research:
- Conduct landscape analyses on similar websites to understand user interface design trends and identify usability improvements.
- Implement user tests on new or existing web pages to identify usability improvements.
- Find insights into user flows and pain points on our website through analysis in Google Analytics and Hotjar.
- Document the research in findings reports, and present findings in meetings.
- UX Design:
- Design wireframes for new pages and page templates using the Museum’s Figma UI kit.
- Information Architecture:
- Document existing information architecture for key website sections through site maps or spreadsheets.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Enrollment as a Junior or higher in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, with a major in UX, User Experience Design, User Experience Research, Digital Design, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience with UX research tools, such as Lyssna (aka Usability Hub), Hotjar, UserTesting, SurveyMonkey, Google Analytics, Optimal Workshop, Miro, or similar tools, whether through coursework, previous internships, or related projects.
- Demonstrated experience using Figma to create wireframes, digital designs, or site maps, whether through coursework, previous internships, or related projects.
- Working knowledge of productivity software such as Google Suite (e.g., Google Sheets, Docs, Slides) for communications and report creation.
These minimum qualifications are essential for the internship role and will help ensure that the selected candidate has the necessary skills and background to effectively employ UX design and research methods to support the Museum Experience and Digital Media office.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated interest in utilizing user research tools to inform website navigation.
- Interest in honing presentation skills to share research findings.
- Organized and able to work independently with supervision from digital staff.
These preferred qualifications are not mandatory but would be advantageous for a candidate applying for the internship role, as they align with the nature of the position and the goals of the office.

To be eligible to participate in the Internship Program, students must meet the following enrollment criteria:
- The student must be 18 years or older currently enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university
- The student must have completed at least the first semester of their freshman year (At least at the time of application)
- Provide proof of legal right to work in the United States
- Must be able to pass a background check
Interviews for the Summer 2025 internship program will begin in April 2025; for advanced applicants. Final selection decisions will be made by May 2025, and all candidates will be notified of their status via email by Human Resources.
