Paid- three-semester experience- 1 semester full-time and 2 semesters part-time
Overview:
The Engineering and Public Works Department supervises the planning, design, and construction of a variety of public works and utility facilities in the City of Maryville, Tennessee. More specifically, City Engineering reviews subdivision, site, and construction plans and specifications for code compliance, municipal standards, policies, and sound engineering principles.
The student engineer/scientist will work under the direct supervision of the Stormwater Program Manager/Engineer. Primary areas of work will include:
- NPDES MS4 Permit (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Permit) – Assist with the City of Maryville’s MS4 permit compliance. Includes, but not limited to:
Public Education/Outreach – assists with developing a variety of stormwater outreach materials and participating in outreach events
Public Involvement - assists with organizing, implementing, and participating in events that involve the public, such as stream cle.an-ups
Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination – assists with storm sewer outfall inspections/mapping (dry weather screening)
Construction – assists with field inspections and education on erosion prevention and sediment control at construction sites.
Permanent/Post Construction – may assist with educational workshops for the public on stormwater control measure inspection and maintenance.
Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping – assists with inspections of City of Maryville properties and education of City employees.
- Storm Sewer Inventory/Maintenance – Assist the GIS Engineering Technician with inspection and inventory of storm sewer condition and developing and maintaining a database for storm sewer inventory. GPS and GIS will be used to collect and manage data.
- City Drainage Projects – Assists with data collection, design, and oversight of drainage projects throughout the city.
- Site Plan Review – Assists with review of engineering design plans and drawings for conformance with City land development guidelines and the City Stormwater Rules and Regulations.
- Data/Database Management – Assists with managing data for permit compliance.
Requirements: Excellent written and oral communication skills are desirable. Basic computer skills should include all Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of AutoCAD, GIS, Hydrology Studio, and Canva/Publisher are a plus. Sophomore standing or above. GPA: 2.5 or above.
Physical Requirements:
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work frequently sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
