Engineering Summer Internships

The Engineering Division of Charlotte Water has opportunities for candidates with engineering and construction management academic backgrounds to fill up to seven summer internship opportunities. These internships will last three to four months (12-15 weeks). The intern summer program introduces the future water professional to the various initiatives, programs, and project management activities within Charlotte Water while gaining valuable engineering and project management experience. Depending on division supported, candidates will understand more about various infrastructure assets associated with treatment and conveyance of water and wastewater. All candidates will gain exposure to e-Builder/Trimble, ESRI, and AutoCAD software products.

  

Salary - $18/hr. - $22/hr. Based on current education level

 

  • Project Management Division - Five (5) positions:
    • Assist in project management of water and sanitary sewer infrastructure improvements associated with pipelines and treatment facilities including project tracking and control
    • Assist in inspection of asphalt resurfacing efforts and the protection of water and sewer assets utilizing GIS information and other tracking software.
    • Assist with database audit reports of project management processes within e-Builder, the construction and capital program management tracking software (Trimble software package)

 

  • Planning Division - One (1) position:
    • Assist in water and wastewater hydraulic analyses and modeling using hydraulic modeling software packages
    • Assist in data collection, analytics, and presentation for regulatory reporting and departmental initiatives.
    • Support engineering studies in support of water and wastewater infrastructure master planning, project analysis and design, and field assessments and data collection associated with existing infrastructure (e.g., water main valves, hydrants, and flow monitoring)

 

  • Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Program - One (1) position:
    • Gain exposure to numerous working groups across the water and wastewater utility
    • Assist with preparation for the CIP related meetings and project request submissions, covers submission and review of all capital funded projects and programs
    • Assist with data analytics related to project costs, schedule and cash flows
    • Assist with project tracking using e-Builder and project mapping using ESRI software products

 

  • Installation and Development Services (IDS) Division -  One (1) position:
    • Participate in the various phases of plan review, construction inspection, and acceptance processes of privately funded (donated) water and wastewater infrastructure projects including water and sewer connections
    • Become familiar with the regulatory requirements for water and sanitary sewer infrastructure that may be applicable through laws, ordinances, regulations, and standards

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an engineering or construction management program with coursework relevant to the major duties and responsibilities

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to design, installation or maintenance of water and sanitary sewer (wastewater) infrastructure and/or project management of infrastructure projects

 

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Requires a valid driver’s license

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fundamental engineering principles applied to project planning, design and/or construction of water and wastewater infrastructure
  • Skill in communication, both verbally and in writing
  • Skill in Microsoft Office Suite products and outputs
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work and complete assignments with supervision
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment
  • Ability to read and interpret design plans
  • Ability to interact courteously and cooperatively in teams
  • Ability to learn hydraulic, geospatial information system, and project management software packages such as: ArcPro, AutoCAD, Infoworks ICM, and e-Builder
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to project design or planning

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is light work and requires applying 10 pounds of force frequently exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: feeling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, mental acuity, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/ inspections, and walking.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:      

Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Requires occasional on-call emergency work.
