Assistant/Associate/Full Professor: Computational Earth System Science

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor: Computational Earth System Science

Oregon State University

Department: Earth, Ocean & Atmo Sci (OAS)

Appointment Type: Academic Faculty

Job Location: Corvallis

Recommended Full-Time Salary Range: Salary is commensurate with skills, education and experience.

Job Summary:

The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for multiple part-time (.75 FTE ), 12-month, tenure-track/tenured Assistant, Associate or Full Professor positions (depending on qualifications) in Computational Earth System Science.

Any hiring at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor with indefinite tenure will be subject to a successful out-of-cycle tenure review process: https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffacultyaffairs.oregonstate.edu%2Fout-cycle-tenure-review-procedure&data=05%7C01%7CRobbin.Sim%40oregonstate.edu%7C318b041759674c6e52fc08da32a8e24f%7Cce6d05e13c5e4d6287a84c4a2713c113%7C0%7C0%7C637877998169557266%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=hNHBQzO7hhf3pOiZ6v%2Bwfu235ZKotkgdla%2B5qAbAe1k%3D&reserved=0.
This position will be part of the OSU Hub for Earth System Modeling within the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science at Oregon State University. The hub will be comprised of faculty from any/all areas of Earth System Science, including the oceans, atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, and hydrosphere (i.e., freshwater systems) with expertise in cutting edge computational and modelling approaches. These may include one or more of the following:
• Climate effects and Earth system solutions (e.g., feedbacks, trends, extremes, human and ecological impacts, geoengineering)
• Modeling, prediction and causal inference (e.g., state estimation, inference, analysis, adaptive observation, parameterization, learning from Earth history),
• Technical tools in the computational domain (e.g., GPU numerics, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, inverse modeling)

Recognizing that methods are developing faster than they can be adopted by disciplinary experts, CEOAS will create a collaborative hub of several new faculty across the full range of these areas. This hub will innovate and employ new methods for solving problems in Earth science using new compute resources at OSU , including cutting-edge High Performance Computing (HPC ) facilities. Among these is the Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex supercomputing facility, powered in part by GPU technologies, which is designed to support large-scale simulations, data-intensive analyses, and artificial intelligence applications. Additional relevant resources available at OSU include the Gaulke Center for Marine Innovation and Technology, the Ocean Observatories Initiative, the OSU Marine Core Repository, extensive geochemical and geophysical labs, and Hatfield Marine Science Center.

Position responsibilities include research, teaching and developing new graduate and undergraduate level courses in subjects related to research interests, and mentoring and guiding the development of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, instructors, and professional researchers. CEOAS professors contribute to service of the College, the University, and academia, including efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion.

The college employs two types of tenure-track faculty positions: academic track positions and research track positions. This position may be hired as either, with different distributions of duties as described in the Position Duties below. For academic-track positions, it is CEOAS policy to hire as a 12-month, 0.75 FTE (equivalent to the traditional 9-month, 1.0 FTE where additional salary can be supported by external grants). Teaching at this level typically includes teaching four courses a year, a mix of undergraduate and graduate level courses. Consideration for indefinite tenure is coincident with evaluation for promotion to Associate Professor. For research-track positions, it is expected that the incumbent will secure external research funding to support 60% of their full-time salary, and it is CEOAS policy to confer indefinite tenure when promoted to full Professor, with the indefinite tenure granted on a 12-month, 0.75 FTE appointment. Teaching at this level typically includes teaching one undergraduate or graduate course a year.
