Internship: This position is a paid, full-time, limited term assignment that offers interns the opportunity to gain substantive hands on experience. Interns enjoy the opportunity to get training and mentoring from experienced professionals in one or more areas. Interns may also be eligible to continue working part-time through the fall and spring semesters, depending on department and agency needs.
The Health Contracts Internship presents an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in healthcare contracting and health plan administration to over 700,000 active and retired Texas educators and their families. The Health Contract Intern performs entry-level work related to their field of study and health care. Work involves participation in contract administration and vendor procurement activities as a member of the Finance Team in the TRS Health division. This position reports to the Sr. Health Contracts Administrator.
This position will start on June 4th and will end on August 8th of 2025.
Salary will be dependent upon education level:
Undergraduate (Junior or Senior) - $19.50/hour
Graduate Student - $21.00/hour
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Health Care Services Procurement and Contracts Management
• Inputs and maintains information and processes in a contract management software tool.
• Assists with monitoring contractor compliance with all state and agency regulations and policies.
• Reviews and analyzes various routine vendor reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
• Provides support in contract spend tracking.
• Assists the Senior Health Contracts Administrator in contractor oversight process, including risk assessment, monitoring plan, and vendor performance to ensure that contractors consistently provide quality services and that funds are spent effectively and efficiently.
• Assists the Contract Manager and TRS' legal and purchasing departments in the renewal of contracts and amendments.
• Assists with evaluating Health's business needs related to plan performance and vendor services.
• Assists with the development of procurement documents, such as statements of work and evaluation criteria.
Health Plan Administration
• Assists with reviewing claim and enrollment data to provide support for invoice processing and benefit decision-making.
• Supports other areas of Health in analyzing program data and developing key performance indicators and dashboards as needed.
• Assists the Contract Manager in monitoring vendor performance in areas of cost trends, service/process quality and delivery, implementation of plan initiatives, and contract compliance.
• Assists with the reconciliation of financial performance guarantees relating to medical loss ratios, claim trends, pharmacy rebates and discounts, and ROIs.
• Performs related work as assigned.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
Required Education
• Currently enrolled in and actively attending an accredited college or university as an undergraduate student with a declared major health information management, health care administration, public health, statistics, finance, business or a closely related field AND within 12 months of graduation; OR
• Currently enrolled as a graduate student (Master or Doctoral) in health information management, health care administration, public health, statistics, finance, business or a closely related field; OR
• Applicant will be required to submit a copy of official college transcripts.
