Job Description:

Overview:


The Information Science Specialist will be responsible for developing and maintaining the firm’s knowledge management system, ensuring that information is structured, accessible, and optimized for collaboration. This role will lead efforts in taxonomy development, SharePoint architecture, and web-based knowledge mapping to create a centralized, efficient data ecosystem. The specialist will work closely with subject matter experts across departments to standardize content and improve information-sharing processes.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Taxonomy & Metadata Management

Develop and implement a structured approach to data organization, applying consistent taxonomy, metadata, and classification standards.

Collaborate with internal teams to define and refine controlled vocabularies and data tagging methodologies.

Maintain documentation and governance for the taxonomy framework.

 

Knowledge Management & Content Organization

Support the build-out of the company’s knowledge management system (KMS) by organizing and curating content for accessibility and usability.

Work with stakeholders to standardize information-sharing processes and ensure alignment with company objectives.

Facilitate content migration, data cleansing, and structuring for effective knowledge retrieval.

 

SharePoint Architecture & Web Mapping

Design and maintain the SharePoint site structure, optimizing document libraries, metadata tagging, and search capabilities.

Develop user-friendly interfaces, workflows, and permissions to enhance collaboration and document management.

Implement information mapping strategies to visually organize knowledge resources and relationships between datasets.

 

Collaboration & Process Improvement

Engage with cross-functional teams (engineering, GIS, marketing, HR, IT) to understand information needs and improve data accessibility.

Provide guidance on best practices for document management, governance, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Support the integration of AI-powered search, automation, or data visualization tools where applicable.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Information Science, Library Science, Knowledge Management, Data Management, or a related field.

Experience with SharePoint administration, site design, and metadata configuration.

Strong understanding of taxonomy development, metadata frameworks, and information architecture.

Familiarity with enterprise content management systems (ECMS) and knowledge management tools.

Proficiency in Power Automate, Power BI, or other automation and dashboarding tools is a plus.

Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Previous experience in a civil engineering, AEC, or consulting firm working with technical data preferred.

Exposure to AI-powered search, semantic web, or natural language processing for knowledge retrieval preferred.

Knowledge of ISO 30401 (Knowledge Management Systems) or similar frameworks preferred.

Ability to work Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm with overtime as needed.
