Diagnostics Engineer, Robotaxi Operations
Tesla is seeking a Diagnostics Engineer to enhance diagnostics and repair of driverless vehicles used as robotaxis, working onsite at our mission control and operations hub. This role will leverage the unique advantages of a fleet of Tesla-owned, homogenous vehicles to fundamentally rethink how our service teams diagnose and repair vehicles.
A strong technical background in diagnosing complex electromechanical systems with heavy software content and deployed in safety-critical applications is required. Experience defining and optimizing processes for a large-scale operation is also critical. You will be responsible for contributing directly to the continuous improvement of our driverless products. This engineer must be passionate about the product, a strong critical thinker, and capable of understanding technical system-level architecture and issues.
As a Diagnostics Engineer in the Vehicle Software organization, this role is responsible for real-time diagnostic support of the RoboTaxi fleet, development and improvement of diagnostic tools and procedures, and feedback of top field issues to our development teams to improve current and future products.
What You’ll Do
- Responsible for creating and improving the tools and processes used for diagnosis and repair of Tesla’s driverless vehicles used as robotaxi’s
- Define the workflow of automated, real-time diagnostics running onboard and offboard the vehicle to direct vehicles to service and inform the necessary repairs
- Create automated diagnostic scripts to analyze vehicle logs, and define and diagnostic procedures to be used by Tesla service technicians
- Collaborate with service technical operations to define repair procedures, including creating necessary software routines to increase repair efficiency
- Conduct analyses to determine cost effective opportunities to rework and remanufacture critical components for re-use within Tesla’s fleet
- Identify and propose product improvements to hardware and software development teams that will increase reliability and uptime, reduce service cost, and minimize time spent in service
- Perform diagnostics on field failures both remotely - looking at data logged by the vehicle – and directly in the field with onboard diagnostic tools
- Coordinate with design and development teams to perform further root cause analysis with component owners where necessary
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Automotive Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science or similar, or equivalent experience
- Experience in automotive industry, technical operations, or technical support of physical products; experience with autonomous vehicles a plus
- Experience testing, validating, diagnosing, and/or designing complex electromechanical system with significant embedded software
- Knowledge of basic vehicle architecture, including CAN; a plus
- Knowledge of software connected devices, especially vehicles, a plus
- Experience with Python preferred; experience with C/C++ a plus
- Experience with data acquisition, analysis, and processing tools, such as SQL, preferred
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
- Demonstrated experience working hands-on with the products; Formula SAE or experience working on personal cars is a plus
