
GIS Summer Internship
Charlotte Water’s GIS Group is seeking a four-year undergraduate student for the GIS Intern position. The GIS Group provides full-scale GIS solutions and support to the entire Utility utilizing web, mobile, and desktop applications. CLT Water is one of the largest public water and sewer service providers in the Southeast. We value competent, skilled candidates with a service focus and a desire to work in a team environment.

Salary - $18/hr. - $22/hr. Based on current education level
Essential Job Functions
- Assist GIS team members with the development, maintenance, and updating of our GIS databases
- Contribute to the GIS team through fulfilling customer requests and editing live data
- Read and interpret preliminary drawings, record drawings, and as-built drawings
- Perform field survey and/or field investigations (frequency will vary based on workload)
- Seek data integrity and quality control in all tasks
Minimum Requirements
- Must have completed at least two years of study in Geography, Earth Science, Engineering, or related field
- Must be currently enrolled in a college or university in one of these fields
- Must have experience using ESRI's ArcGIS Pro 3.x with some knowledge of importing, editing, exporting, and creating data
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience making maps, editing data, and/or querying data in an ESRI geodatabase environment
- Exposure to or experience with water/wastewater utilities as an industry
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic working knowledge of ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro 3.x desktop software and general GIS principles and concepts
- Basic cartographic and map-making skills
- Basic knowledge of ArcGIS editing tools and familiarity with shapefiles, geodatabases, and other general GIS nomenclature
- Possess the technical agility, focus, flexibility, enthusiasm, vision, and detail orientation to enhance both the GIS team and Charlotte Water as a whole
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work and complete assignments with supervision
- Skill in communication, both verbally and in writing
- Skill in Microsoft Office Suite products and outputs
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Ability to interact courteously and cooperatively in teams
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
- Requires a valid driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of fundamental engineering principles applied to project planning, design and/or construction of water and wastewater infrastructure
- Skill in communication, both verbally and in writing
- Skill in Microsoft Office Suite products and outputs
- Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work and complete assignments with supervision
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Ability to read and interpret design plans
- Ability to interact courteously and cooperatively in teams
- Ability to learn hydraulic, geospatial information system, and project management software packages such as: ArcPro, AutoCAD, Infoworks ICM, and e-Builder
- Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to project design or planning
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is light work and requires applying 10 pounds of force frequently exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: feeling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, mental acuity, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/ inspections, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Requires occasional on-call emergency work.
