Intern, Communications and Outreach

Collins Career Technical Center seeks a dynamic, self-motivated intern to support our school district’s communication and outreach efforts. This internship is ideal for students studying Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field looking for meaningful, real-world experience in a fast-paced educational setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write content for blog posts, newsletters, and social media platforms
  • Conduct interviews with staff, students, and alumni to capture compelling stories
  • Photograph and film events, programs, and daily campus life
  • Manage content scheduling and publishing on platforms like Instagram and Facebook
  • Assist with internal communications and digital signage updates
  • Monitor engagement trends and contribute to reports or analytics
  • Help develop and contribute to a new school podcast—we have the equipment and ideas, just not the time
  • Pitch creative ideas to boost engagement and streamline messaging

Essential Skills:

  • Strong writing and storytelling ability
  • Verbal communication and interviewing skills
  • Familiarity with photography, video editing, or podcast production tools (Canva, Adobe, Anchor, etc.)
  • Understanding of social media best practices and platform-specific strategies
  • Curiosity, attention to detail, and visual sensibility
  • Ability to manage time and work independently
  • Willingness to take initiative and follow through on open-ended projects

Best-Suited Majors

  • Journalism - For students with strong writing, interviewing, and reporting skills—ideal for blog posts, newsletters, and podcasting.
  • Public Relations - Great for students trained in message strategy, community engagement, and brand tone—key to social media and internal comms.
  • Marketing / Digital Marketing -  For students focused on audience targeting, analytics, and content strategy - valuable for engagement tracking and campaign design.
  • Media Studies / Mass Communications -  A versatile fit for students experienced in multimedia storytelling, video production, and broadcasting.
  • Strategic Communication - Combines writing, digital media, and communication planning - a strong match for someone juggling multiple platforms and formats.
  • Graphic Design / Visual Communication - Especially helpful if the intern will support visual storytelling, signage, or design templates.
  • English / Creative Writing -  If candidates bring strong narrative and editing skills, they could thrive in content creation roles (blog, podcast scripting, etc.).
  • Film / Broadcasting / Audio Production - This suits interns interested in leading or supporting your podcast initiative.

Internship Details:

  • Timeline: Flexible (Preferred during the normal school year, August - June)
  • Location: On-site at Collins Career Technical Center (Chesapeake, OH)
  • Hours: Flexible (10–15 hours/week preferred)
  • Credit: Can be structured to meet internship credit requirements in coordination with Marshall University or your academic department

This is a hands-on opportunity to build a strong portfolio, explore storytelling across formats, and make a visible impact in a thriving educational environment. Our Director of Communications will mentor you and collaborate with staff across multiple departments.

This is currently listed as an unpaid internship.

Interns are required to have a current BCI/FBI background check on file before they can begin. The district will pay for this.
