GIS Address Specialist

We’re looking for a collaborative, detail-oriented GIS Addressing Specialist to help keep Raleigh connected and running smoothly.
In this role, you’ll play a vital part in managing and maintaining accurate address and street data using GIS technology. Your work directly supports everything from permitting and development to public safety and emergency response—making a real impact every day. This position serves as the go-to expert for anything related to addressing within the City of Raleigh. You'll be a trusted resource for both internal teams and external partners, helping to answer questions and resolve concerns around addresses and street names.
You’ll review and approve new addresses and street names within Raleigh’s jurisdiction, helping ensure the city continues to grow in a smart and well-organized way. You’ll also have opportunities to work alongside a team of forward-thinking GIS professionals on projects that support departments citywide.

Our ideal candidate has hands-on experience working with desktop GIS tools. You’re confident in your ability to review data, solve problems, and create clear, useful maps.
You’re also a strong communicator—able to explain technical concepts to both colleagues and community members in a friendly, approachable way. You can juggle multiple requests, prioritize tasks, and adapt as project needs shift.

The IT team collaborates with academic institutions and other local governments to spearhead progressive projects that not only improve the quality of life in Raleigh but also pave the way towards a vibrant digital future. Duties and Responsibilities
- Reviewing development plans, site plans, and recorded maps to assign accurate addresses and street names for parcels, buildings, and units—following established standards and policies
- Managing and maintaining existing address data, including performing quality checks to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Assisting with street name changes and helping guide those through the review and approval process
- Supporting City departments with any addressing needs or questions they may have
- Providing excellent customer service to external agencies, developers, and residents regarding address-related matters
- Collaborating with the Enterprise GIS team on additional GIS projects and tasks as needed
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Associate's Degree in information technology, geography, geographical information systems or directly related field and two years of technical geographical information systems experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Additional Information
Knowledge of:
- GIS principles, practices, and tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, QGIS)
- Addressing standards, naming conventions, and local policies
- Geospatial data management and quality control methods
- Reading and interpreting site plans, development documents, and recorded maps
- Customer service practices and effective communication
Skill in:
- Editing and maintaining accurate geospatial data
- Assigning and validating addresses and street names using GIS
- Creating clear, well-documented maps and supporting materials
- Managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment
- Communicating technical information to non-technical audiences
- Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment; may require some work in the field with moderate exposure to extreme temperatures.
