Purpose:
This AmeriCorps Position, part of an AmeriCorps Program, supports the Building Resilient Economies in Coal Communities (BRECC) initiative, which aims to strengthen economic resilience in coal-impacted regions of Apache and Navajo Counties. The program serves communities including Tuba City, Page, and surrounding Chapter Houses, with a commitment to sustainable development, collaboration, and honoring the deep connection between people and place. The AmeriCorps member will engage stakeholders, enhance partnerships, and support local economic strategies focused on coal transition capacity, infrastructure, industry growth, community quality, and workforce and business development.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.
Description of Duties:
As an AmeriCorps member, you will support the Economic Development Office in advancing the goals of the Building Resilient Economies in Coal Communities (BRECC) initiative. Your primary responsibilities will include:
· Mapping local stakeholders: Identify public and private organizations involved in economic development and coal transition efforts in Apache and Navajo Counties.
· Outreach and relationship-building: Develop and implement a strategy to connect with these groups, learn from their experiences, and build stronger partnerships—especially in Tuba City, Page, and surrounding communities.
· Strategic planning: Work alongside county leaders to outline a plan that enhances existing collaborations, creates new ones, and identifies future opportunities to support community-driven economic growth.
· Community engagement: Visit stakeholders where they live and work to build trust and better understand the needs and strengths of each community.
· Support long-term impact: Help build momentum across five key strategies—coal transition capacity, infrastructure development, industry expansion, community quality of life, and support for local businesses and workforce development.
This position offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in rural and tribal economic development, public outreach, and strategic planning while exploring one of the most culturally and geographically unique regions in the country.
Qualifications:
· United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
· At least 18 years of age
· College Graduate
· Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
· Typically, this position is expected to serve full-time (35-40 hours) from 6/02/25 to 6/01/26, but exact schedules may vary.
· Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
· Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
· Member will receive a Virtual Member Orientation (VMO) from VISTA on their first day of service.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed their required year of service; the member has satisfactorily completed assignments; and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets, accomplishment tracking, and quarterly reporting.
