Location: Flagstaff Area National Monuments, Flagstaff, AZ
Housing: Must be secured by the intern/fellow. A housing stipend of up to $950 per month will be provided. Shared housing at one of the Monuments may be available
Project Background: In alignment with the Grant Agreement between the National Park Foundation, Flagstaff Area National Monuments, and the Hispanic Access Foundation, these entities will support the hire of this internship. The work the intern will do will be commensurate to a GS0025-05 Interpretive National Park Ranger position and will provide crucial representation and capacity not otherwise available. The internship will be primarily field-based and be located at the Flagstaff Area National Monuments (comprised of Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater Volcano, and Wupatki). These National Monuments showcase rich indigenous culture (thirteen tribes have recognized ancestry to these places) and dramatic geology to include the most recent volcanic eruption on the Colorado Plateau.
Project Duties:
- 60%: Visitor Center duties. This includes staffing one or more Visitor Centers (one at each Monument) providing a spectrum of welcoming, orientation, and information services for our 500,000+ visitors per year. Work in this realm can take many forms and includes working at a visitor center desk, roving inside/throughout the building, assisting with nonprofit bookstore sales, working with Junior Rangers, etc.
- 20%: Roving Monument trails to provide informal interpretation of primary interpretive themes.
- 20%: Other duties as assigned, which includes collateral duties as well as research, communications (to include social media content), and/or working with other staff on outreach opportunities.

- Identify as a member of an indigenous tribe
- Enthusiastic about representing nationally significant natural and cultural resources
- Comfortable and capable of working independently and as part of a small but mighty team
- Able to work outside in all weather conditions
- Experience working with the public
- Able to connect with diverse audiences
- Comfortable with potential public speaking opportunities
- Proficient in and enjoys writing and communicating clearly
- Able, with instruction, to provide informal interpretation
- Has excellent customer/visitor service skills
- Has knowledge and can provide content for social media platforms
Minimum Qualifications:
- Age restrictions as needed for agency or PLC: Age under 30 y.o. as of July 2025 (up to 35 for veterans)
- US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected
- Have reliable transportation
- Be available to work weekends and/or holidays
- Strong communication and customer service skills (written, verbal, and digital)
- Able to be flexible in a dynamic workplace
- Be a positive, contributing member of a small team
Working Conditions:
Mix of indoor & outdoor work. Moderate hiking (up to several miles) on trails at/near the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. Flagstaff is at @ 7,000 feet and has four-season weather. High temps in the 80s in summer and occasionally well below freezing in winter. Periods of standing (in Visitor Centers, etc). Ability to wear a daypack with appropriate gear. We receive @ 500,000 visitors a year at the Monuments so lots of interactions with a global audience. Office space provided either at HQ and/or the Monuments.
Stipend + Benefits:
- A biweekly stipend of $1,428 based on a 40-hour workweek.
- Monthly housing stipend up to $950 per month
- Commuting stipend up to $25 per week

- Funds available to support professional development opportunities that align with role and goals (training, conference, etc.)
- Public Land Corp Eligibility – after completing the internship, PLC status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for certain federal positions.
