Purpose:

This is an AmeriCorps Program designed to strengthen community engagement and enhance visitor experience at the National Mall and Memorial Parks, particularly in anticipation of the 250th Independence Day celebration. The program aims to serve the large and varied population of over 36 million annual visitors by increasing volunteer capacity and supporting the stewardship and interpretation of national memorials, including the Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Memorial. Guided by the values of civic responsibility, public service, and collaboration, the program promotes meaningful connections between visitors and the historic spaces of the National Mall.

As an AmeriCorps Position, the member will serve as a volunteer coordinator at the FDR Memorial, providing administrative and programmatic support to enhance volunteer engagement and event planning. Working with the National Park Service, Trust for the National Mall, and partner organizations such as the FDR Memorial Legacy Committee, Gallaudet University, and Melwood Inc., the member will help coordinate special events, strengthen community partnerships, and support ongoing volunteer initiatives across the memorial.

 

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.

 

Description of Duties:

·        Help Organize Volunteers
Assist with scheduling and coordinating volunteers who support the FDR Memorial.

·        Plan and Support Events
Work with staff and partners to help plan and carry out special events at the Memorial.

·        Work with Partner Groups
Communicate and collaborate with groups like the FDR Memorial Legacy Committee, Gallaudet University, and Melwood Inc.

·        Keep Records and Stay Organized
Help track volunteer hours, contact information, and event details using basic computer programs.

·        Attend Meetings and Share Updates
Join meetings with National Park Service staff and partner organizations and give updates about your work.

·        Welcome New Ideas
Suggest new ways to improve volunteer experiences and help events run smoothly.

·        Support the Park’s Mission
Help visitors have a positive experience and support the National Park Service’s goal of preserving and honoring history.

 

Qualifications:

·                  United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien

·                  At least 18 years of age

·                  High School Diploma/GED

·                  Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check

 

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:

·                  Typically, this position is expected to serve full-time (35-40 hours) from 7/14/25 to 7/13/26, but exact schedules may vary.

·                 Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

 

Orientation and Training:

·       Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

·       Member will receive a Virtual Member Orientation (VMO) from VISTA on their first day of service.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed their required year of service; the member has satisfactorily completed assignments; and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets, accomplishment tracking, and quarterly reporting.
