Gap, Inc.

Brand Associate

May 2017 • Chattanooga, TN

What I liked

I have made friends with my co-workers. The employee discount is 50%, which is amazing. I have been given raises every couple of months, and I have been given a leadership position.

What I wish was different

I wish the drive wasn't so far.

Advice

If you get into a job at Old Navy, I think it is worth it to stick around. A lot of people work summers and quit. Staying on payroll and working a couple of shifts helps the managers trust you as an employee and then your summer job for next year will already be lined up.

What I liked

My location was willing to hire students for the summer, and readily accept us back for breaks (Thanksgiving, winter break, spring break, etc.).

What I wish was different

Advice

While my career goals do not lie in retail, this job has helped to expand my customer service skills and problem-solving skills. My advice would be to try something new or different because you can learn more about yourself and you can gain valuable skills to apply in other areas and other careers.

I liked working with customers and helping them find what clothes they need.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a different manager because he made everything very stressful and competitive for no reason.

Sales Associate

What I liked

I liked working an early shift before the store opened because it left more of the day open and made me feel more accomplished.

What I wish was different

I wish I got more hours.

Advice

The store is very popular and gets really busy. Time spent not helping employees or running clothes to and from the sales floor, is only going to leave you more work later in the day.

Sales associate

July 2014 - August 2018 • Hebron, KY

What I liked

The people are friendly and the job helps one build great communication and organization skills as well as a strong work ethic.

What I wish was different

I wish I would’ve been trained as a cashier since that is a leeway into accounting. Our registers are not operated like most places, so we have to memorize the prices of every item in the store and scan the codes accordingly. Then at the end of the day, we take down the drawers and count the amount of cash we have on hand and calculate sales every night.

Advice

the job is easy and many people take advantage of it. But if you go in and do your job, it will develop you into a strong employee for future jobs.
