Sortation associate

October 2018 - July 2019 • South San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The job was physical and didn't require a lot of thinking, it was a good workout. There were a lot of different tasks that you could perform, so never a dull shift. There was also a lot of overtime available because most people would leave at their eight hour mark.

What I wish was different

The hours, it was a weird time in-between swing and graveyard shift. My hours were 8:15pm to 4:45am three days in a row. It messed up my sleep schedule and I was always dead on Sundays.

Advice

Listen to what the floor supervisors say and do your job to the best of your ability.

Warehouse Associate

June - August 2019 • Lisle, IL

What I liked

Rewarding manual labor. Gave me a good workout. I enjoyed learning their bar code-scanning system and using technology to get the job done.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more interactions with my manager/with other people in charge. It was very hands-off most of the time.

Advice

Be ready to do a lot of physical labor, and anticipate a lot of exertion. Eat a hearty meal before your shift and get plenty of rest after your shift is over.

What I wish was different

I wish they had been a little clearer about what I would be doing for the job (it was a little vague and so when I did it, it was a bit different than what I expected).

Environmental Health Safety Intern

June - August 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

The environment that I came into. The people I met and the connections I made. I learned a lot of valuable skills. I had a heavy work load because they saw potential in me. I had a mentor the whole time, he helped me every step of the way and encouraged me when I needed it. I never felt out of place they are very welcoming. I met so many people from around the country with different backgrounds and I even met a handful of interns from around the country.

What I wish was different

My manager was away a lot because he was the district manager . he was responsible over a big portion of the state. I did not get to work with him as much as I would have liked. The work was very hard and receiving any negative feedback was really hard for me. However that would only help me improve. The only thing I would change is perhaps going during a longer semester. I did not want to leave it felt like I just got there.

Advice

The company is very competitive and if you get an interview congratulations! If you don't keep trying. It is a very driven environment. Do the best that you can and someone even if its not you're manager will notice the hard work. NETWORK! I met people from all around the country that had so many different backgrounds. Do not get discouraged if you get negative feedback, use that as fuel for the next step. Talk to as many people as you can because its scary being in a new company where you do not know anyone. Make friends with the area managers they will help you a lot. Do not be afraid of the management, they only want to help. Go the extra mile whenever you can, they will thank you for it. Even it the internship is not in you're major apply for the experience. I only took 2 supporting classes in safety and got the environmental health and safety internship. The experience I got has helped me so much. At the career fair, companies I talk to always want to ask me about my experience at Amazon.
