Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Great experience with an agile team working on my own project the whole summer. Worked with AWS and learned a lot about the intricacies of that software as well. Great overall experience.

What I wish was different

The virtual aspect was definitely not super great because it prevented me from really getting to know my coworkers.

Advice

Reach out and network with as many people as possible, especially if you are virtual.

HR Assistant Intern

May - July 2019 • Moreno Valley, CA

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with and the fast-paced environment! There was something new each day!

What I wish was different

I wish Operations Interns were treated on the same level as Corporate interns did. There was a clear distinction and that made the experience a little less enjoyable.

Advice

Embrace the leadership principles because you will see it every day you’re there! Don’t be afraid to THINK BIG and DEEP DIVE everything as well as LEARN AND BE CURIOUS!

Picker and stager

July - August 2019 • Bethpage, NY

What I liked

The experience to work for Amazon and that pay was above minimum wage. The staff was also mostly friendly and helpful.

What I wish was different

The research and development higher up. They changed systems to one that was intended to be more efficient but actually made it much more difficult and tedious.

Advice

Don't let yourself get stressed or overwhelmed and when you do remember that if you're working hard its logistical problems that are hindering you.

Software Developer Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Good Codebase Great Location Interesting Problems

What I wish was different

More grounded expectations for the intern project (i.e. don't reassign quarterly projects from the engineers) More employee benefits More accountability to the interns from the bar raisers and managers

Advice

The internship really depends on what team you work on, which you don't really know until you start working.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I lived in the University of Washington which had a beautiful campus and plenty of activities available. Seattle was an amazing city and had plenty of attractions and restaurants for me to explore alongside great bicycle infrastructure. I worked with a great team full of supportive people and learned a lot.

What I wish was different

I didn't get to deploy my product as I ran out of time before the internship ended. I wish I could have gone through the whole deployment procedure so I could learn about software development from start to "finish".

Advice

Network a lot! There were a ton of intelligent people for me to meet.

Floater

June - August 2018 • Tigard, OR

What I liked

The atmosphere was authentic and genuine. Everyone was for the most part trying to to a good job and deliver quality service and product to customers in a way that was helpful and friendly. I enjoyed getting to know my co-workers and working different shifts allowed me to gain experience in different departments as well as expand my knowledge of working with different customers/co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had started sooner. While it was pretty busy work, it was stable and regular, giving me some much needed structure for my summer. I got to know some of the people I worked with, but if I had been given a longer contract I could have gotten to know them better.

Advice

Always put 100% into your work and interactions with people and they'll appreciate the effort (even if they're having a bad day). Some people won't think much about it, or will expect more from you, but doing your best will be your best witness when peer reviews and supervisor meeting come around. Not to mention being friends with people (like your supervisor/boss) is much easier than being enemies.
