DKY1 Associate

June - August 2019 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

The pay was pretty nice and the hrs were flexible. All of my coworkers were somewhat friendly

What I wish was different

Lot of hard labor, but I expected that

Advice

Don’t be afraid of asking for help, and don’t try to show off (nobody cares and even worse you might hurt yourself)

Sales Ops Intern

June - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved the versatility, and ability to talk to people from other teams whether it was within my org or outside. I loved that my management invested so heavily into my professional development, giving me challenging projects to stretch my realm of knowledge.

What I wish was different

I wish that this program was a little more structured from the University Recruiting side - they were disorganized, often didn't answer or gave incorrect answers to big questions.

Advice

Have an open mind. Amazonians believe STRONGLY in their leadership principles, and talk about them every day in every context. They also thrive in ambiguity: this could be with roles, projects, direction of the business; the most important part is to be flexible and to be hungry to learn.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

All the interns were housed together so the social experience was prime. Seattle also offered a lot of activities to do after work and on the weekends.

What I wish was different

Although the people on my team were fantastic, I wasn't very passionate about my team's product. I wish I had been placed on a team of my choice. One criticism I have of Amazon is the HR process is very obscure.

Advice

Your team, especially the people and work you do, is perhaps the most important factor of whether you enjoy your job or not. Find a team whose work you enjoy and a manager and mentor who will support you.

What I liked

I enjoyed the overall work environment. My coworkers were very kind and friendly.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've been given more hours per week as we had a limit of 20 hours a week.

Advice

Get close with your coworkers, no matter where you work because it becomes a much more enjoyable experience.

What I liked

- Fast paced environment - Opportunity to learn lots - Opportunity to be in a management role - Fun culture and very nice, smart people

What I wish was different

Advice

- Great chance to learn lots at a big company - dive in, ask questions, and work hard, and it will pay off

Area Manager

June - August 2020 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to network with top Amazon officials all over the world. It was interesting to get an inside perspective of Amazon operations and their efforts to combat the climate crisis. Finally, I enjoyed connecting with my co-workers daily from all over the world and learning about their cultural beliefs.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in person and gave me the opportunity to learn hands on what happens inside the fulfillment center. However, I am grateful Amazon adjusted to the pandemic and moved the internship online when other companies simply canceled their programs.

Advice

I would advise students who are looking into interning with Amazon to be extremely detailed. Amazon is ever changing and throws curveballs daily. Students should be detailed and engaged every day in order to maximize their experience .

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

- interesting tech stack - room built into internship to learn new technologies

What I wish was different

- didn't feel like project was very impactful - diversity and inclusion at Amazon are subpar (e.g. maybe 5 women engineers total in 70-engineer org, and almost no engineers that are not white or Asian)

Advice

- good internship experience if you're interested in learning about specific technologies, but bad company culture, especially for underrepresented groups

Software Developer Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

- Everyone was super friendly - You get an opportunity to work with the best engineers in the field - Pay, including benefits such as the housing stipend and transportation reimbursement, is very good for an internship - Seattle is an amazing city! - The work was interesting and challenging - Lots of free food :) (though this is not typical from Amazon teams) - Team outings every so often, like laser tag or whitewater rafting - Amazon is the biggest company in Seattle, so you definitely feel like you're a part of the city. There are Amazon buildings everywhere. - Leadership principles are great and really help to make good decisions for the customers and company as a whole, even when it is difficult - Dogs in the office! - Extremely flexible schedule

What I wish was different

- Some teammates are less capable than you would expect at such a large company - Amazon's "be frugal" principle is taken to the extreme in unnecessary areas. In-building lunches are expensive, and the coffee is subpar. Not a huge deal, just a minor annoyance (especially in comparison to other big tech companies)
